Rockland Bee Tours:
New City, NY

The Bee Tour given by Rockland Honey at Cropsey Community Farm is fascinating! It is amazing to see the bees up close and the process of them making honey. Rockland Honey has a number of beehives throughout Rockland County where the bees help pollinate the vegetation and produce fresh local honey to be sold.

When joining a Bee Tour, visitors are given bee suits, hats with a net face-covering and gloves to wear during the tour.  The bee suits are only jackets and are not full length, therefore it is advisable not to wear shorts, sandals or the like.

Once geared up, you can watch how the beekeeper lights a bee smoker and enter the area where the bee hives are. There are thousands of bees coming and going. The beekeeper advises the best spot to watch the bees so that there is little chance that they will feel threatened and sting anyone. (There is a very small chance of getting stung. It is not advisable for someone who is allergic to bee stings to visit.) The beekeeper will then explain the process of how the bees make honey and open a hive to show visitors in real time how the bees make the honey combs and honey. When we visited we even got to see the queen bee.

At the end of the tour everyone gets a free honey stick. Visiting the bee hives is surely an experience to remember.
