New Orleans topography contains many swamps, or bayous as they are called locally. A variety of wildlife can be found at different times of year in the bayous. Swamp tours are popular NOLA attractions. There are many types of boat tours offered. We opted for a kayak tour since a kayak feels as if you are actually sitting on the water.
The 2 hour kayak tour was everything we hoped for and more. We met our guide near the French Quarter and went into the tour van where we were driven to the bayou. Once the Kayaks were unloaded we all got onto either single or double kayaks and began our guided tour of the bayou. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable of the area and the wildlife. We were blessed with a nice warm day in February and loved the quiet calm on the water. In the winter, the alligators that most tourists wait to see are generally not out. We did not see any reptiles but we did view an eagle in its nest and some other birds. The majestic cypress trees with the intriguing Spanish moss line the swamps and give the area a mysterious feel.
We couldn’t believe how quickly the 2 hours passed. We really enjoyed the serene and informative kayak tour. I can only imagine how much more exciting it must be when the alligators are out.
