Driving up Whiteface Veterans’ Memorial Highway to the summit of Whiteface Mountain is an amazing experience. The view on the way up to the top of New York’s fifth highest peak is awesome. The road up leads to a Castle Café and gift shop. Right near the parking lot is an elevator that can be taken to the summit of 4,867 feet. When we visited, the elevator was being replaced with a new one so we hiked up from the parking lot to the summit. All along the road up there are beautiful places to stop, many with picnic tables.
The day we went was rainy. We waited for the sun to come out and then headed up. We got to the parking lot and most of the area was clear, but as we were hiking up the rocky and scenic path to the summit, clouds came and covered the surrounding areas. All we saw was white instead of views all the way to Vermont and Canada. We were able to enjoy the breathtaking views whenever the clouds moved on.
In order to enter the Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway, an entrance fee is collected at a Toll House. The entrance fee to the Whiteface Mountain is included in the Olympic Sites Passport and is worth purchasing if you have time to enjoy the sites under the jurisdiction of the ORDA.
