The Dreamcatcher chairlift took us to the 9,862 ft. summit of Fred’s Mountain. When we got to the top, it looked like the view from the window of an airplane. We enjoyed unsurpassed views of the Teton Range and surrounding states of Wyoming, Idaho and Montana. Upon arriving at the top of the mountain, we met a guide from the Nature Center staff that explained to us a lot about the plants growing on that high altitude. It is very different from anything you see elsewhere. Due to the higher elevation, there is less oxygen and different growth. We enjoyed a leisurely walk to the overlook, and stayed for a long time just taking in the views. I was actually quite shocked that the teenagers weren’t asking to leave and were content just hiking and stopping to take in the beautiful views. We took the chairlift back down but the more ambitious can hike back down the Bannock Trail to the base area.
Grand Targhee Resort is famous for its bike trails in the summer; but because we didn’t have reservations or come early enough in the day, there weren’t enough bikes for our group and we couldn’t use that part of the mountain. The bikes get loaded onto the chairlift and there are myriad paths to take down the mountain. You can easily stay there for an entire day if biking is your thing. We spent about 4 hours there, because we took our time enjoying the scenery.
