Mohonk Mountain House is a Victorian castle resort founded in 1869.  This resort is famous for its incredible surroundings and unspoiled natural beauty. Mohonk is located on the Shawangunk Ridge in  New Paltz, New York.

Over the years, the ten-room inn and tavern on the shore of the magnificent Lake Mohonk, evolved into the grand House it is today, with excellent and courteous accommodations for 600 guests. The historic inn is nearly an eighth of a mile long with sweeping lawns and vivid, award-winning gardens. There are also options of renting a cottage on the resort property.

Mohonk’s property consists of 1,325 acres with many meadows and gardens. It connects to the Mohonk Preserve, which is crisscrossed by 85 miles of hiking trails and carriage roads. Mohonk’s Barn Museum, located in close proximity to the hotel, offers a fascinating view of life on the mountaintop from the time the resort began. The Barn Museum presents antiques and artifacts that bring alive the history of the fascinating inn.

Most of the sports and activities are only offered to resort guests but passes can be purchased at the gatehouse for a day visit to Mohonk’s incredible grounds and enjoy the many hikes and picturesque lake. There are some recreational options for day visitors such as horseback riding. Options can be viewed on their website.

When we visited for the day we enjoyed a most enjoyable hike with the most magnificent views of the hotel and lake. Later we went on kayaks on the crystal clear lake. I’ve heard people who visit say that Mohonk is the “Switzerland of America” a visit to Mohonk explains it all.
