We were told Jennette’s Pier is a very nice spot to rent fishing poles and try our hand at fishing. When we pulled up, we were told that the pier is under construction and off limits. We were told to try Avalon Pier instead.
At Avalon Pier there is a building at the entrance that houses the Snack Shack, Stonefish Beach Bar and a small arcades area. They also have fishing poles for rent and bait for purchase.
We were helped by a very friendly and funny fellow behind the counter. He helped us figure out what bait to purchase with the pole we rented.
We then proceeded out through the outdoor seating area to the pier. The view of the ocean was magnificent and many people with fishing poles lined the sides of the pier. This was our first real fishing experience. The experienced and knowledgeable people fishing on the pier were extremely helpful in starting us off and giving tips.
The best part was that there was action the whole time. Every few minutes someone caught another fish. We even watched someone catch a clearnose skate , a flat-bodied, diamond-shaped fish with its eyes on top and mouth/gills on the underside. (The fisherman threw it back into the water.) Although we weren’t out fishing for very long we caught two mullet fish. The experienced fishermen helped us take the fish off the hook.
We had such an enjoyable fun and wholesome day. We were hoping to come back in the evening to resume fishing, since the entry fee and rod rental lasts all day, but it did not end up working out .
