The Banker horses, better known as the Wild Horses in Corolla, are descendants of Colonial Spanish Mustangs. About approximately 100 horses live freely mostly near and by the beach in the dunes of Corolla, NC. The Wild horses live mostly in Corolla on the Northern part of the Outer Banks and in Shackleford Banks, the southernmost of the barrier-island chain.
On a recent trip to Corolla, we drove a 4×4 vehicle onto the special beach access path (Only 4×4’s can drive on the beach access road). We drove around the area hoping to meet up with some wild horses. Driving on the beach alongside the water was so refreshing and fun. We then turned into the side streets right off the beach where the horses are spotted more frequently.
We did this a couple of times with different results. We didn’t see horses each time but when we did it was thrilling to see the horses walk around freely. People must stay at least 50 feet from the horses and feeding them is prohibited.
Before we went we were advised that in order to drive on the unpaved beach sand we should let out air from the tires so as not to get stuck. (There are air refill stations at the Corolla Historic Park not far from the beach access road.)
We drove out on our own to look for wild horses but if you are unable to do it on your own, there are many tour companies that offer horse viewing tours in their 4×4 jeeps or special open air trucks.
