I couldn’t believe that the Hidden River Cave, over one hundred feet underground, is located right behind the museum right on Main Street in Horse Cave, Kentucky. When I arrived at the address on my ticket I thought that we would be bussed to the cave. I never dreamed that all we needed to do was exit the back door and go down some steps and lo and behold the cave opening was right there.
Once we entered the mouth of the cave we began our descent down the 230 steps passing the hydroelectric generating system that once supplied the town overhead with water and electricity and then continued into the cave.
The cave is really unique. There is a 100 foot long suspension bridge-the longest in-cave swinging bridge which takes visitors over and near a stream. The guided tours last for approximately an hour and culminates with the view of the beautiful arched Sunset Dome, named for its unique lighting effects, is 150 feet underground.
When we visited, the interesting and engaging tour guide kept us fascinated throughout our tour that we didn’t realize that we actually went through 325 steps.
The Museum with it’s many cave related exhibits has no entrance fee and can be enjoyed by all.
