Jungfraujoch-Top of Europe:
Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland

Our trip to Jungfraujoch, also known as Top of Europe, was so incredible, we can’t stop rehashing it even a few months after our return.

We spent two days in the Lauterbrunnen area this past August and the Jungfraujoch was the perfect destination for an all-out experience in the majestic and magnificent alps.

We started out at the Grindelwald Station and took the large new Eiger Express Cable Car with huge windows and panoramic views of the mountains, for the 15-minute ride up to the train station. We transferred to the Jungfrau Railway for the 26-minute ride up to the Jungfraujoch. At 3,454 meters high, it is the tallest railway station in Europe. We were blown away by all the snow that greeted us in August. Snow is present there all year round.

We arrive at the Jungfraujoch terminal straight into the Shopping Centre with the many souvenir shops and restaurants. After picking up our personal Jungfrau Passports we began following the self-guided route to the 360 degree cinema of the Jungfrau panorama and then to the multimedia display of the history with lights and sounds.  We then continued on to the Ice Palace.

We descended into the ice tunnel and marveled at the plethora of unique and detailed sculptures made completely of ice. There were bears, eagles, penguins, a baby grand piano, benches and more. We continued out to Glacier Plataeu and the snow covered outdoors. We enjoyed the beautiful views of the Black Forest, the Vosges and the Aletsch glacier as well as many more tall mountains. We even got to watch a construction helicopter drop some supplies right up there.

Our next stop was the Snow Fun Park (there is an additional charge for Snow Park activities). There is nothing like snow sports with the sun shining strong. Only a light jacket was necessary. The teens tried the zipline over the snow while the others chose snow tubing and sledding. Gliding down the snowy hills while surrounded by breathtaking 360 degree panoramic views all around is epic! In the winter there is skiing available as well. Our kids enjoyed the snow park so much, they didn’t want to leave.

Our next stop was supposed to be the Sphinx Terrace but just then a big cloud descended over the observatory so we skipped that. We were all so tired from our very full day up on the Jungfraujoch so we headed back for the return ride with the beautiful views.

We felt so fortunate to visit the Jungfraujoch and enjoy some of nature’s most beautiful sites and at the same time enjoy some manmade beauty and fun activities.
