We had just one day to spend in Switzerland on a stopover on the way to Israel. What better way to get a feel of the Alps, enjoy a fun day on top of the mountain and not have to travel too far from the airport in Zurich?
We enjoyed a scenic gondola ride up the mountain. At the top we followed a loop path and enjoyed the beautiful mountain views. Even though it was raining and a bit foggy we still got to enjoy the magnificent view of the surrounding Alps.
There are various activities at the Pilatus both in the summer and the winter. There is an adventure center which includes a ropes course, zip line and wall climbing. The1350 meter Fräkigaudi alpine slide is the longest in Switzerland. There is also a playground for the little ones and paragliding for the adventurous. In the winter there is sledding and snowshoeing available on the mountain.
There are a few of options or packages available and several ways to visit the Pilatus. The 30 minute gondola cable car is the most basic way to get up the mountain. That is the way we went up with some of the most magnificent views all around.
In 2011 a new larger cable car was opened to bring visitors from Fräkmüntegg directly to Pilatus Kulm where there is a restaurant and hotel. There are also options of riding the steepest rack railway in the world. It travels from Alpnachstad to Pilatus Kulm. There is an option of the “Golden Tour” which begins by boat in Lucerne continuing with a ride on the cogwheel railway and then transferring to a cable car up on the Gondola.
