Set in a beautiful serene environment, Zaanse Schans is a replica of a residential town during the 18th and 19th century. The town does not just display artifacts from that time. There are actual wooden houses, workshops and working windmills. There a clog workshop where visitors learn about the history of the traditional Dutch footwear and get to see actual clogs being made from beginning to end. The cheese factory demonstrates the process of making Dutch cheese.
There are about 10 working windmills at Zaanse Schans. The windmills helped to make paint, oil and cocoa as well as giving power for many other purposes. There are a host of museums to visit; the bakery museum, the museum shop of Albert Heijn, pewter workshop with live demonstrations and many more.
Just walking around Zaanse Schans and taking in the magnificent surroundings is enjoyable. There is also an option of taking a boat ride or renting a bike to ride around the town.
