Brookgreen Gardens was originally founded as the grounds of the vacation home of Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington in 1931.Mrs. Huntington was an amazing sculptor and created unique sculptures to decorate the garden. Many of the sculptures found in the beautiful garden are Mrs. Huntington’s originals. We visited the garden in the winter and did not see it in full bloom. I can only imagine how magnificent the garden and sculptures must look when complemented with blooming flowers and plants.
In addition to the gardens and sculptures, Brookgreen is rich in rice plantation history. There are viewing areas of the former rice fields with audio explanations. In the warmer months there is a guided boat ride that can be enjoyed along the former rice plantations.
The Lowcountry Zoo is an enjoyable mini zoo where local wildlife are kept in the most natural habitat. Near the zoo there is the Whispering Wings Butterfly Experience when in season and many fairytale playhouses for children to enjoy.
