Travelling over the 17.6-mile Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel is a unique experience. It is currently the fourth longest bridge in the US and the 14th longest in the world.
As the name indicates, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel is partially bridge and partially tunnel crossing over the Atlantic from the Eastern Shore of Virginia to Virginia Beach.
The first part is a bridge which then continues underground to a tunnel and then comes back up to a bridge before continuing underground to another tunnel and back up to a third bridge (3 bridges and 2 tunnels). On one side of the bridge-tunnel is the Atlantic Ocean and the other side is the Chesapeake Bay. We especially enjoyed from afar the sight of the bridge suddenly not there in the spots where the tunnel is. From afar it looks like there was a large piece of the bridge chopped off. We assume that the reason for the bridge to change into tunnels is to make way for large sea vessels to pass through.
The Views of the Ocean and Bay are beautiful and the 25-minute ride is a calm one without traffic lights, stop signs and intersections.
There is an Overlook area at the Southern tip of Virginia’s Eastern Shore. It has a large parking lot and people like to stop there to view sunset in all its glory.
