The Kancamagus Highway is a 34.5 New Hampshire Scenic Byway also known as the “Kanc”. The highway cuts through the White Mountain National Forest and offers breathtaking views of the mountains all around. There are some hiking trails and waterfalls right off the road. At the highest altitude the Kancamagus Pass is close to 3,000 feet in elevation. There are no gas stations, stores or cell phone service on the most the highway, this adds to the serenity of the experience.
We enjoyed a drive through the Kancamagus on our way from Lincoln to Atittash and Story Land. The drive took much longer than the hour it should have. We kept stopping at the many scenic Overlooks on the way to take in the magnificent views. The Pemigewasset Overlook was my favorite, with sign posts describing the history and agriculture of the area. The Pemigewasset Overlook seems to be a popular spot for wedding photos. While we were there we saw two brides arrive with their photographers. The Kancamaguc is also especially popular during the fall when people flock from all over to see the stunning colors on the trees all around.
