We started our bike trip at the base of Cannon Mountain and continued through the woods in Franconia Notch State Park, before returning to the rental store. We’d missed lunchtime, so we wanted to take a break soon after beginning our bike trip. My teenagers biked ahead of us and when they spotted Profile Lake they stopped and waited for us. They just knew that was the perfect spot to stop for lunch.
The 13 acre Lake is at the foot of the mountains in Franconia Notch State Park. Since the lake is at the level of the mountains it offers an extra beauty. Profile Lake connects to the beautiful Pemigewasset River that flows through the area. There are hiking paths in the woods surrounding the lake. Kayaking and fly fishing is popular at Profile Lake.
There is a parking lot right by the lake with a path leading through some trees but the parking lot is not marked. We parked our bikes and enjoyed sitting on the ground near the very picturesque lake until we were caught in a surprise mountain downpour which soaked us.
Profile Lake got its name from the “Old Man in the Mountain”, the famous rock formation that was right nearby on the mountains. The formation, which resembled an old man, collapsed in 2003.
