Bokrijk:
Genk, Belgium

When we heard about Bokrijk from our friends in Antwerp, we realized we’d found the perfect place for a day trip. Bokrijk is a combination of historical living and beautiful nature.

An hour’s drive from Antwerp, Bokrijk is well known for the open air  museum where there are historical buildings set up as a town would have looked in that area in the beginning of the 1900s, demonstrating the culture, history and customs of the area. There are demonstrations of what the craftsmen would create, there is a large windmill, farm houses and animals, herb gardens, a bakery where they sell freshly baked goods, school house, game room with games from that era that visitors can try.  There are so many more exhibits  and buildings to see, we didn’t have time to see it all.

The playground at Bokrijk is unbelievable! It is practically the size of a mini town. The highlight is the humongous slides which are 2-3 stories high. There are pancake swings, ziplines, tire swings, merry-go-rounds, a playground for toddlers, many picnic tables and so many more exciting elements that I can’t remember off hand.
Right by the playground there is a mini golf course and mini electric cars that can be used for a small fee.

The bike rental on site has a variety of options. There are bike paths that lead out of the Bokrijk Park to the surrounding area. The path we took goes through the woods  and leads to the most amazing paved path through the water. It literally feels like biking through the water. The geese were leaning over the side to the people looking for food. Once we crossed over we continued on the path until we returned to the entrance of Bokrijk where we returned the bikes.

Everyone had a  phenomenal time at Bokrijk-no matter the age.
