On our way from New York to Ocean City, MD we passed through Delaware. As we approached Smyrna, we wanted to make a restroom stop. We turned off the highway to the Smyrna Rest area, and I was pleasantly surprised to see how it resembled a park. The rest area has grassy fields with picnic tables scattered all about and even some grills. There was a fenced in area for dogs to run without a leash. There was also a playground (It was closed when we were there due to covid19). There was a small garden with a small pond path to walk through. There was a fountain surrounded by flowers behind the building.
The building housed the restrooms and an information center. (The information center was closed due to covid19.).
The Smyrna Rest Area was one of the most impressive rest areas I’ve visited. I heard that even locals sometimes visit the playground and picnic area because it is so nicely done
